Kornberg is a family of German nobility. The family seat was Kronberg castle above Kronberg im Taunus, Hesse from around 1220 until the male line died out in 1704. The house traces its descent to the Knights of Kornberg. The knights were members of the Teutonic order, sworn to defend the Papal State and the Pope. Around 1200 the order converted to Lutheranism and aligned themselves against their former masters. The knights later became a part of the Prussian establishment. King Frederick I of Prussia raised them to nobility in gratitude for their services. During the Napoleonic Wars the House of Kornberg was on the side of the German states fighting Napoleon I. Many Prussian generals had relatives from the wider Kornberg family. The family motto became: Loyal zu seinen eigenen (Loyal to its own).
The Kornbergers served the monarchs of Prussia later the German empire for many years. After monarchy in the German Empire was abolished in 1918, several members of the House of Kornberg fled the country afraid that their aristocratic status would put them in mortal danger.Members of the house are known to have settled in the USA, Norway, UK, and Austria.
